Tales of ancient history...

SCRIPTURES

...are aptly called as the Puranas.

The Puranas are replete with the history of ancient India.

The universe was created ages ago and for the good of mankind,

there born a great man in every era.

In the Treta Yuga, Lord Rama appeared with a message of paramount obedience

and set an example for the whole world to follow.

In the Dwapar Yuga,

Lord Krishna explained the principle of duty through the Bhagavad Gita

and established the reign of righteousness.

As time passed, unrighteousness overpowered righteousness.

Dishonesty, discrimination, inequality, vices, avarice

and blind faith were on the rise.

Fear led the mankind into the abyss of ignorance.

To destroy this darkness, another great man was to be born.

This time, that great man was called... Buddha.

It's been ages since the epic battle of Mahabharata.

That epic struggle broke up India into many parts.

Two thousand five hundred years ago, in northeast India,

near Magadha and Vaishali lay a republic called Kapilavastu.

It was ruled by a mighty warrior from the Shakya clan

King Suddhodana of the Sun dynasty.

-Gopal. -Yes?

I think we have some good news.

Laushika, you're right. That's why the bells are tolling.

The king and his enemies Faced each other

A fierce battle ensued The brave won in the end.

Who was the brave one?

He is none other Than King Suddhodana

Your Grace.

Your Grace.

Laushika, I was going to send for you, The bells are...

There's good news, Your Grace. King Suddhodana

defeated the tribal chiefs and is returning to Kapilavastu.

God has answered my prayers.

Did you convey this message to Queen Mahamaya?

No, she's not in her chamber at the moment.

All right. Make arrangements to distribute food to the poor.

I'll personally give this good news to my sister.

Got you.

Devdutt.

-Where are the other children? -Who?

There's no one, but me.

Well...

what's wrong with me?

May I go?

Yes?

-Where? -To my mother.

Yes.

But you promised me something.

Ah, I forgot about it completely.

Say it then.

I won't let you go till you say it.

Say it. Please.

First close your eyes.

Yes.

Mother.

Sister. Sister.

You aren't dressed up yet.

Why do I need to dress up?

Can't you hear the victory drums?

The winds carry the great news!

His Majesty is returning victorious.

The city of Kapilavastu is rejoicing.

Prajapati, this is great news.

Make arrangements to welcome His Majesty.

Once he returns, serve him well

so that the fatigue of battle gets washed away.

What about you?

Joyous occasions

and a barren woman don't go hand in hand.

Sister.

My pain for being barren is quite evident

and it will affect His Majesty too.

I don't want to cause him pain.

Sister, you got me married to the king

so that I'd bear him a child

and give Kapilavastu its heir.

Four years have passed.

I still haven't given the king a child.

-So that makes me barren too. -No.

No, Prajapati.

You always give me hopes, don't say so such things.

I can't bear to see you in pain.

It's our duty to welcome the king together

and add to his joy.

-What do you have in mind? -A small request.

Get all fancied up to welcome the king.

So that he can't take his eyes off you.

Glory to the king!

Glory to the king!

Glory to the king!

Glory to the king!

Glory to the king!

Glory to the king!

Glory to the king!

Glory to the king!

How are you, Dronadhan?

I am fine by your grace.

Everything is fine in our kingdom.

As long as you are around, nothing can go wrong.

I can entrust you with the defense of Kapilavastu

and go to war without worries.

Please come.

Hold it.

I won't let you in.

Why won't you?

I will let you in only if you give me my gift.

My subjects pay me taxes, but little King Devdutt

wants me to pay him taxes.

Here is your gift.

You can't go in unless you fight a duel with me.

You want to fight a duel with me with my sword! All right.

Devdutt. Amazing.

Shall we go in?

Glory to the king!

Does it hurt a lot?

No, Mahamaya.

It's nothing compared to the pain fate has dealt us.

I seem to have everything and yet...

I have nothing.

Even after two marriages, I am...

childless.

I am the cause of your sorrow.

God delays,

but never disappoints.

Royal Priest Vachaspati has sent a message.

Sometime from now,

there will be a winter solstice.

The moon will descend in Cancer.

Venus will be in Pisces.

There will be a lunar mansion.

The same lunar mansion

during which Lord Rama was born.

To beget a child an oblation should be performed...

Our prayers will be answered.

I just want to see my baby in your lap, Maya.

I cannot conceive.

But I'm sure

Prajapati will bear you a child soon.

So be it.

Mahamaya?

Just because I let her play with my son,

Queen Mahamaya treats him like a toy.

Your Grace.

What are you doing here at this hour?

Well...

I couldn't sleep, so I thought

I'd come and see Devdutt.

My lady!

Good decision.

After all, Devdutt is like a son to you.

I wish

that Devdutt would stay with you

and that you shower him with affection.

My lady.

What are you doing here?

Your Majesty, I understand her pain.

It's quite natural.

You long for something you don't have.

Your Majesty,

Devdutt is like a son to you.

You can take him with you.

Mangala, where is Devdutt?

With the king.

That's what I hate.

Every time, I want to meet my son, either he's with the queen

or with the king.

-The other night... -I sent him there.

Sooner or later,

Devdutt will replace the king.

He will be the crown prince.

And soon...

he will be the king of Kapilavastu.

Every time I see Devdutt sitting on the throne with the king,

I start weaving dreams.

I can almost hear people screaming...

"Glory to Crown Prince Devdutt.

Glory to Crown Prince Devdutt."

Stop building castles in the air.

Mahamaya or Prajapati...

if either of them bears the king a child,

all your dreams will come crashing down.

What's wrong with you?

See.

I trapped my dreams.

Those birds represent their dreams.

And that's my net.

It is impossible for them to bear children.

To make the impossible, possible,

they've sent for Royal Priest Vachaspati.

He'll perform an oblation so that the king begets a child.

An oblation?

If one could conceive by conducting an oblation,

there will be a furor.

Kamuka!

Yes, Your Grace?

Put these birds in a cage.

Devdutt will use them for target practice.
