Last night the acts were split into four categories, and

the judges became mentors.

The category that they would like you to mentor is... the teens!

Are you serious?

The groups.

Um... The young adults.

No way!

The over-25s.

Yeah!

Oh, my God.

Each category was invited to their judge's home.

When I found out that I had the overs, that was a little bit disappointing.

And the fight was on for a place in the final 16.

The young adults performed for their mentor, Demi.

I don't think he could win this competition.

This is really hard.

And the groups sang for Simon.

My heart says yes to them, and my head says yes to them.

But we can't have both.

Tonight... I'm here to find a star.

Prove to me that you're worth my time.

The over-25s face their mentor, L.A. Reid.

Talent isn't the question.

Viability in the marketplace is the question.

And the teens face Britney Spears... I'm just not convinced it's

strong enough.

With guest judges... She cares about her moves too much.

Will. I.Am... She's like a little dragon, scorching the town.

Justin bieber.

I felt it, you know.

Emotionally, I felt it.

The battle for a place in the live finals is on.

How do you compete against that?

We need to get these six down to four.

I don't want to see anybody go.

I think I am.

Here we are at my home in Beverly hills, and I am

mentoring the category over-25s.

This is what it is, the final six in our category, and

everybody's got the same dream.

My contestants are Jason Brock, Tara Simon,

vino Allen, David correy, Tate Stevens, and Daryl black,

but only four can go through to the live shows.

I really didn't want this category.

I'm known for developing young artists like Justin bieber, who.

I decided to bring to help mentor this category, and his

manager, scooter braun.

Whatever you did in your first audition, wonderful.

What you did in boot camp, wonderful.

Now you're here at my house.

You know, at the end of the day, it's going to be about winning.

And I want to win, so I'm not happy, but I'm still planning on

winning.

You guys have this platform to just do so much, and I feel

like, you know, you just have to just give it your all.

I'm here to find a star.

You're already the underdogs, so I need you to go out there and

really prove to me that you're worth my time.

I want L.A. to really believe in me.

I want him to be on my side.

There's really great talent here, you know.

I want to be one of the ones that he wants to keep and that

he thinks really has a chance.

I had people tell me when I was a kid, like family, "Jason, you

can't do that.

You can't do that.

There's a lot of people who sing better than you."

And that is something you believe inside, because...

it's your family.

And I still remember it.

Just to be this far is really an honor.

I mean, when I was a kid, I was a total misfit.

Finding my voice really helped me develop confidence.

I could think to myself, "well, at least I have my singing."

Your voice is a song's best friend.

Just experiencing this, I can't imagine going back to my

tech-support job.

I have a lot to give to the world, but I'm 35, and this

might be my last chance to make it big.

I mean, this is a huge opportunity.

That was a really strong vocal performance.

I'm adopted, so I feel like this opportunity will reconnect

me with my birth mother if she hears my voice.
