Die ersten 200 Zeilen.

Then this restlessness in me-

it's something that's inside me. I can't do anything about it.

When I was little I used to climb high up into a tree-

and far away I could see a forest.

It was like a misty ribbon between the sky and the water.

And I longed for that forest-

and I used to dream of going there one day.

And when I got there-

it would be quite different from all other forests.

I'd walk into it and touch the tree trunks.

The branches would brush against my hair.

But then I realized it was just the same as all the other forests-

and I never went there.

Now I dream about a person as I once did about that forest.

HOT CAT?

Hello! Want a cup of coffee?

Come on, there's only the two of us.

- Thanks, but I haven't got the time. - There's always time for a cuppa.

Ten marks the lot.

- Is that whitefish? - This was a special order.

- Don't dash by like that! - Sorry, I didn't notice you.

That's all right. I don't want to be too formal in the summer.

- We're still out of town. - In the country?

Must say I don't enjoy it at all. Shitty old lake, I think.

But Kaarlo enjoys it and you've got to humour the old man. Let's go this way.

Did I tell you about this madman that turned up on our beach?

One night I was alone outside and suddenly there he was on a rock-

yelling in an awful voice: "Lutheran or Catholic?"

Good God! That's Salminen from class seven.

Are you alive there, Salminen, or are you dead?

Everybody has a right to his own sex life.

Is that meant to be funny?

- I guess we have to do something. - I shouldn't worry.

Look, if he's found like that, the whole school will suffer for it.

- We could call his family. - No, that's the headmaster's job.

...below the ridge right near the school.

I'm afraid we'll have to take this up at the staff meeting.

Ask him to report to the office tomorrow.

Good. Goodbye.

Well, that's that, then.

Don't bother. I'll bring the van up.

To have such a thing happen right at the beginning of term.

I suppose we'll have to expel him. We don't really have any choice.

- I'd suggest some other solution. - What other solution?

Martti meant that we shouldn't actually expel him.

What sort of reputation would the school have, if we tolerated... bums?

We have a responsibility to the decent pupils.

- I'm with Martti on this. - You mean not punish him at all?

Do as you please, but couldn't we dock his behaviour mark-

and suspend him for a certain period of time?

We ought to take into consideration the fact-

that a working-class boy at a grammar school-

is not on quite the same footing as, say, the son of an academic.

The footing he's on isn't necessarily any worse-

but working-class families are not familiar with grammar schools.

A boy like that gets no backing from his parents.

If the pupil's from the kind of family that can't control him-

that's nothing to do with the school.

I didn't mean that. I meant that we should be more understanding.

At that age a young boy wants to be something...

You know nothing about it, Reverend.

Surely he knows whether or not they drink at school parties.

It's impossible for the Reverend to control 500 young boys.

It's our duty to get some discipline back into this school!

- Fancy a bit of a poke? - No!

Stop that.

Give me a fag. Why not?

They give you pimples and make your teeth yellow.

- Hey, you. Got a fag? - No.

- Ripa, throw me a fag! - Do you need matches too?

Keep your fags to yourself!

No treats for you.

Hi. I've just come from school.

They're having a staff meeting. Bet they're chewing over what you did.

Yeah, I know. Let them chew.

The lads and me don't see how they can kick you out-

just because you went off the rails once.

They all like a few themselves.

I've seen Titus coming out of the Grand pissed as a newt.

What's that got to do with this?

Well, we'll see soon enough. Bye then.

I'm dead sure they'll expel him.

Our school is so strict. You know what a lot of old hags we've got.

Those hypocrites just want to show us who's boss.

That's that settled, then.

Or does anyone still have something to say?

Thank goodness. Now we can get home.

Are you going straight home? How about a bit of a walk?

The next day he said: "What did I need trousers for?"

Citizens, look upon me with envy! I am a free man.

- Bullshit! - It's true. Kicked out.

- Now we can have a proper party. - Fine by me.

Saturday, if it doesn't rain.

Stop that!

- I know how you feel. - You've got no idea!

Get the hell away from there!

Are you crazy? Have you taken leave of your senses?

- Why did you leave in the middle? - What do you mean?

- You should've said what you thought. - But I did.

Yes, but something that would have had some real effect.

I've been going on about the same old thing for years now, to no avail.

You should have said what you think, anyway. You're a senior master.

Look, love. Get this into your head.

You can nag those old farts all you like, but don't start in on me.

Hey! Come and have a drink.

You've got lovely eyes.

Pretty mouth. Quite big.

So what's up with you?

I don't know. You tell me, if you think you know.

- Shall I? You're desperate. - No, I'm not.

No? Well, if it's not it-

it must be the other thing.

- I'll come and sleep with you. - Don't bother.

Why lie about it?

I feel so dead when the water's frozen over.

I do love water.

Gazing at water has always fascinated romantics.

- I didn't mean just looking at it. - You mean being in it, or what?

Oh, go on.

Love God above all and love thy neighbour as thyself.

Dear pupils, we are responsible for ourselves and our deeds-

both before God and before our fellow men.

But Christ expects us to take responsibility for our neighbour, too.

You remember the dreadful story in the Old Testament-

the one about the first fratricide-

by Cain.

You rememberhow God asked Cain: "Cain, where is your brother Abel?"

And you remember what Cain replied to God:

"Am I my brother's keeper?"

Give us patience and a forgiving spirit.

Help us to live as Thou wouldst have us live-

and shield us from all evil. Amen.

"We'll roast you to a cinder unless you tell us your name and mission."

"No, but I meant that we should brand him."

- "One death owed to God." - "Yes, one death owed to God."

"Let us all seize a firebrand. When I give the word"-

"let us fling them over this devil!"

The reaction is chemical in nature.

It prevents the appearance of mitotic spindle at the cell division stage.

What happens to the chromosomes then?

- Riitta. - The chromosomes multiply.

You spoke well this morning, Kaisa.

I think that people should have a greater sense of responsibility.

What on earth do we want more of that for? It'll only get us in a mess.

Think what's going on in the world.

What's going on now that wasn't before?

Everyone talks about peace and humanitarianism, yet wars still go on.

- Mankind hasn't advanced much. - You can't change human nature.

It's a waste of time talking about peace if we forget God...

Quite right, Alma. People shouldn't lose faith in God's power.

How wonderful it would be if we...

- Let's stick to reality. - It is a reality for me.

- But was that the original question? - Of course.

We must all feel responsibility for our neighbour and for the whole world-

so that we can gradually put an end to war and crime.

Isn't that what the Kingdom of God on Earth means?

I'd like to ask you just one thing.

What does your personal responsibility entail?

Good heavens, haven't I already told you?

It sounded to me like some mental health organization's proclamation.

You can think just what you like.

You might answer me, anyway.

What effect does this world-improving sense of responsibility have on you-

and where does your own guilt begin?

I'm a sinner just as you are. And I hope that God will...

I just wanted to know where your social-mindedness ends-

and your own guilt begins.

Why, my dear girl. They're one and the same thing.

Are you some sort of inquisitor?

I see, it's all the same thing to you. You must be one hell of a fine person!

When you threw that drunken boy out of the school-

that was your godforsaken neighbourly love, I suppose.

- And responsibility for his future? - What do you mean?

- Your morals make me sick. - Are you crazy?

- Why start picking on her? - It's nothing to do with you.

Sit down, please.

- Who's absent? - Tuija Hietala and Arja Knuutila.

- What was your homework? - Page 9 to page 10.

I've noticed that the others' attitude towards me has changed.

You always dramatize everything.

Why did you have to start laying into Kaisa?

- You know why. - Kaisa is a social-minded woman.

She can't think so far ahead. She thinks she's improving the world.

- She's a liar, anyway. - Don't exaggerate.

If you think one thing and I think another, that's between us, right?

It seems I don't understand people and no-one understands me, either.

How old is your son?

He'll be nineteen on October the third.

Well, he's quite a young man.

Has he got any kind of job lined up?

I've got a little workshop of my own.

Yes, yes, that's right, so you have.

That's excellent. Life's so much more secure that way than for many.

You can keep an eye on him and teach him, then.

He knows most of it already, but he's none too keen on my trade.

If only he'd managed to get through school somehow-

he might have found life a bit easier.

The earnings from a small business aren't anything to write home about.

No, of course not.

But we can't allow drinking.
